The Foamy Cleaner & Canned Tomatoes

Standard

“Back to School” also means “Back to Business”. The “business” of Fall Cleaning and Canning!  I like to “fall” clean/organize instead of “spring” clean. SO, since fall is a wink and a blink away, it seems like a good time to share a cleaner “recipe”

Here is a cleaner, I like to use. It came from either “ask Heloise”  OR from the “Amish Cook” column from the newspaper. I read it years and years ago, before it really ment anything to me and now it comes in handy!!! (often.)

(NO before and after picture, as I am pretty sure there is NO room for a toilet picture on a food blog.)

This will spruce up and freshen up your toilet real nice, use it around the bottom, on the hinges of the seat (remove seat for best results) and the part of the bowl were the water comes out.  A little goes a long way, too much and you will be scrubbing gritty paste away for a little while.

This cleaner also works great around your faucets and anywhere where there is hard to reach places to clean. Use it to freshen up the drains in the kitchen and bathroom as well!

The Foamy Cleaner

equal parts water and baking soda
splash of vinegar

Mix together the water and baking soda, as much or as little as you need. Mix to form a paste, the consistency of toothpaste. Brush paste on the areas you want to clean. Let set till dry, about 10-15 minutes. Sprinkle or spray with vinegar, add enough vinegar till it foams. Let set another 5-10 minutes. Wipe clean with a damp cloth (may need to wipe it a few times) and dry with a dry cloth.

Happy “Fall” Cleaning!

On to some food.

Canning. Do you enjoy canning??? It can (pardon the pun…) be a chore, but a rewarding one at that. If your garden is giving you a lot of tomatoes and you don’t want to make sauce or salsa……. just can TOMATOES. Use your canned tomatoes in place of store-bought diced tomatoes. You will need to drain it a bit (just as you do the store-bought).

If you prefer not to use all the onions, peppers and celery that is fine. I just find it add nice flavor and I usually add those veggies to my sauces anyway.

Canned Tomatoes

about 20 medium tomatoes
1 c. diced celery
2 c. diced onion
2 c. diced green pepper
2 TB. sugar
3 tsp. salt
1 tsp. pepper
good dash of garlic powder

Bring a large pot of water to a boil and place the tomatoes (a few at a time) in the boiling water, boil for about a minute ~ then take tomatoes out and place in a sink of ice water. When cooled down a bit,  peel ~ the skins should come right off. Cut the stem out as well. Cut the tomatoes up into bite size pieces.

Add the remaining ingredients to the tomatoes in a large pot and bring to a boil.  Simmer about 10 minutes. Carefully pour into pints or quarts and process. 10 minutes for pints, 15 for quarts.

Recipe yields about 5 quarts (give or take).

Homemade “Velveeta” Cheese

My family’s favorite casserole has a good amount of Velveeta cheese in it. I really haven’t cheese in a long time. BUT it is nice to serve their favorite dish, right?!?!? So I wanted to have the “right” cheese for it. I had seen homemade Velveeta recipes before, but was nervous to try. Not sure why, it seemed simple enough. A friend of mine DID try it and her family enjoyed. That gave me the courage to give it a go as well. Happy I did, it worked out GREAT for the casserole as well as in scrambled eggs and grilled cheese! A keeper for sure!!!!!   Does this seem interesting to you??? Will you give it a try?!?!?   PLEASE let me know what you think!!!! (I do SO enjoy hearing from you 😉 !!!!

My notes for this recipe are ~
*Use less salt (maybe 1/2 tsp. – 3/4 tsp. only).
*ALSO, I used a Pizza Blend cheese ~ while it was good, next time I will use either Colby, as it calls for, OR a Sharp Cheddar.
* Oh, ALSO, you know those rectangular food storage containers from Rubbermaid??? They  hold about 20 oz. or 2 1/2 c-ish??? Anyways, I lined one of those with plastic wrap and chilled the cheese in it overnight. Worked well.
* One more thing. I had to mix mine in my food processor a bit longer then 1 minute. You are just looking for a nice smooth cheese.

Oh, yes, here is the recipe from America’s Test Kitchen Feed. My adapted version is below, Enjoy!!

Homemade “Velveeta” Cheese
1 TB. water
1 1/2 tsp.  powdered gelatin
12 oz. Colby cheese, shredded (3 c. about)
1 TB. dry milk powder
1/2 – 3/4 tsp.  salt
1/8 tsp. cream of tartar
1/2 c. plus 2 TB. skim milk

Line a rectangular plastic container with plastic wrap.

Put water in small bowl, add gelatin, stir, let set 5 minutes. Pulse cheese, milk powder, salt, and cream of tartar in food processor until combined, just a few pulses.

Meanwhile, bring milk to boil in small pan. Take off heat, add softened gelatin and stir til dissolved. With processor running, slowly add hot milk mixture to cheese mixture until smooth, about 1 – 2 minutes. Taste, add more salt if needed.

Pour cheese mixture to prepared container, smooth the top nicely. Wrap tightly and chill at least 3 hours, or overnight.

On to the recipe you CANNOT eat…….

Homemade Ant Trap

So. We have ants. Do you??!?! Those little buggers just appear as the weather warms. We needed to get rid of them BEFORE they got rid of us……… I ran out of the ant gel we usually use. So, lickity split, a friend told me to check out Pinterest for an ant killer “recipe”. Found it here. Made it. Watched the ants drink and get all drunk and stuff and then, BOOM!!!! They were gone. Now, some of their friends (who apparently did not get the memo about the honey concoction that kills) came a-calling a day or so later. But, they are gone now too.  Sorry guys. You don’t  belong in my house.

Try out this homemade version (IF you have ants and let me know what you think!!) I used honey as the sweetener.

Homemade Stain Remover

Stains!!!! DO you have stains!?!?!? Do your kids or loved ones have stains?!?!?!? Silly question, right?!?!?!

Here is my favorite stain remover. Now, it makes more than you need for 1 stain, but wait a day or two…….your pile of stained clothes will use the whole batch RIGHT up!!!!!

Here is the recipe.

Here is the “proof” it works.  (You know those strange “grease like” stains that. just. appear?? Well, it got rid of that! It also does really well with the white long sleeve shirts that have dirty cuffs…..) Please don’t scrutinize the picture too much, it looks like part of the stain is still there……I must have missed a spot, in real life, the stain DID come out…….

Put the leftover in a bottle, at YOUR OWN RISK ~ as this will happen.

food 989

I still keep the leftovers, overflowing bottle and all. I just keep the leftovers in my utility sink (to contain any overflow…..cause there WILL BE overflow……), shake it up when I need it. Good to go.

I would enjoy knowing if ANY of this caught YOUR attention, as it did mine!! Thanks as always for reading!!!!

Homemade Cleaners

food 951One of the most clicked on “recipes” on this blog is the Soap Scum Shower Cleaner ~ FUNNY!!!! You guys must really like to clean! 😉

(I just went to the recipe index and it seems that over half!!! of my links are NOT linking to their recipe!!!! OH NO!!!! Well, I will try to fix that BUT believe you me that it will take me some time! Sorry FOR the inconvenience!!!! 😦 )

Anywho…..

I recently started to make a few other cleaners. I have liked them. SO I thought I would share them.

Check out the “recipes” here!

Here are my thoughts……..

* “Blessing ‘in a Bottle” ~ that is similar to the Soap Scum Shower Cleaner, so I already had that and like it.  A keeper. (She does add a little something extra, I think I will try that as well next time!)

* Window Cleaner ~ I made this the first time and  I struggled a bit with streaks. SO I made it again, SKIPPING the detergent and the food coloring.  I liked it much much much better. In FACT it cleans windows/mirrors really well!!! (The picture is takes on my 1st batch, the one with food coloring, that is why it is blue.) A keeper.

* Air & Fabric Cleaner ~ I REALLY really REALLY like this one. I really like things to smell fresh and clean. SO, this one was a hit for me!! A for sure for sure keeper!!! I used Downy fabric softener. Be sure to use your favorite smelling fabric softener.  BE sure to shake the bottle before each use, as the baking soda separates a bit when it sits.  A keeper, oh, I said that already!

* Bleach Cleaner ~ Yep. Great for toilets, shower curtains, dirty DIRTY shoelaces. I like. A keeper!!

* “The Cure All” ~  This is a GREAT all-purpose cleaner. I use it mid-week on my counter tops, sinks, toilets, really wherever you need a quick clean up. I do not have any essential oils, so I skipped that.  I AM interested in trying it with essential oils….sometime. For now, I am content with it “as is”.

* HUGEST HELP OF ALL!!!!!! IF you ignore everything else I have written. Please note this!!!!!      1/2 an ounce =   1 TB.       This helped me GREATLY.

* I used address labels to write the name of the cleaner AND the ingredients used. This helps when your bottle is empty and you want a QUICK refill, the recipe is RIGHT there!

If you guys give this a try, be sure to let me know what YOU think! THANKS! Have a wonderful day!
